Thrive: Events
What does it mean to thrive? To us, thriving involves taking time to care for ourselves, for each other, and for our home. Mayla events celebrate aspects of what it takes to thrive.
Reflect: Writing Workshops
Personal, reflective writing can celebrate what we have accomplished, heal old wounds, clarify new paths, and create new ways of thinking. We started in 2019 with meetings in the Kogod Courtyard of the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery - an opportunity to be inspired by art, nature, and each other.
In October of 2020, we began hosting virtual writing workshops. These writing workshops are meant to create a little space for reflection, writing and sharing. In the face of societal and personal losses and traumas, personal writing in community might be a way to heal ourselves and mend the world in small ways. Contact us if you would like to attend the next one.
October 2020 - Hope (and Despair). This workshop was an opportunity to use poetry to help us reflect on the pandemic and protests for racial justice. I summarized that first workshop in this story.
November 2020 - Harvest. We used Robin Wall Kimmerer's ideas about abundance, thanksgiving, and an honorable harvest as inspiration for our writing.
December 2020 - eeINSPIRE WEBINAR: The Stories We Tell: Reflective Writing to Examine How Nature, Diversity, and Place Influence Our Teaching. Hosted by the North American Association for Environmental Education. Grab a journal and see the recording here - the webinar includes an opportunity for independent writing. Participants called it "meditative" and "freeing."
Next: Rest. The next workshop will be on the value of fallow periods in life and agriculture.
Nourish: Salons
When we gather together to share food and ideas, we nourish the body and the spirit. We host potluck brunches, picnics, and dinners. Each salon will feature a different topic and will include people with diverse perspectives. We would love to help you plan a salon at your home or business. We hope to gather again in person after the pandemic.
Past Salons:
Brunch Salon on sharks. March 24, 2019. After the brunch, we attended a DC Environmental Film Festival screening of Sharkwater Extinction.
Acoustically, a dinner salon on music as a tool for healing the environment and the self. September 5, 2019. In partership with Music & the Earth.
Replenish: Exploring Nearby Nature
Time in nature replenishes us, but we are spending more and more time indoors. We will work with partners to provide experiences in nearby nature, including boat trips, forest bathing, urban walking tours, hikes. Contact us if you would like to co-host an event.
Nurture: Service Events
To thrive, we need a home that is clean and beautiful. We will work with partners to organize service projects to care for our communities and nearby nature. Please reach out if you would like to plan an event with us.
